.US Locality Domain Registration Procedures
Welcome to prairie.net. We administer select .US locality domains under the provisions of RFC 1480. To maintain the integrity of these geographic namespaces and prevent abuse, we enforce a strict, manual vetting process.
Automated, AI-generated, or incomplete applications will be rejected. The modern commercial Internet is the appropriate venue for this.
No Warranties: All services are provided on a strict as-is and as-available basis. prairie.net offers absolutely no warranties, guarantees, or promises of uptime.
Pre-Configured Nameservers: Your listed primary and secondary nameservers must already be actively serving the requested DNS zone record at the time your application is submitted. If our lookup fails, the application is rejected.
Communication: All correspondence is handled exclusively via email.
Please be reasonable and do not request a large quantity of hosts/zones - ideally one per person If you have an organization that may have many variations, please let us know of your needs before making a request.
If any of these requirements seem confusing or difficult, Send an email with your concerns and we will try our best to help out.
To apply for a locality domain, you must complete all steps below. Incomplete or missing information will result in the immediate rejection of your application.
Step 1: Prepare Identity & Nexus Verification
To prevent automated requests and out-of-region fraud, you must provide a formal, notarized physical document verifying your identity and intent.
Your document must include:
- A written statement: Explicitly acknowledging your US Citizenship or legal status, along with a detailed description of your bona fide interest in the requested locality.
- RFC 1480 Specifics: The statement must explicitly include the details required for lines 1 through 9b of the RFC 1480 form (click to see blank template).
- Notarization: The final document must be hand-signed and notarized by a licensed US Notary Public.
Step 2: Fill out the RFC 1480 Template
Fill out the RFC 1480 form template.
Strong Recommendation: Include an optional backup email address within your application text.
Step 3: Send email submission
When your RFC 1480 data and your notarized verification document are both ready, submit them via email:
- To: hostmaster@prairie.net
- Subject: LOCALITY DOMAIN
- Format: Plaintext email body with RFC1480 contents
- Attachments: High-resolution scan of your notarized document (PDF, JPG, or PNG)
- Size Limit: Max 5MB total attachment size
Step 4: We will review and confirm your request and add your host(s) within a reasonable timeframe.
The structure of the US Domain is described in
RFC1480
by the administrator, Jon Postel, and original registrar, Ann Westine Cooper.
